1st Extraordinary Congress elects new leadership for FRUSE CUT

Esteliano Gomes Neto is the new president of the Federation who, unanimously and alongside 26 leaders from various unions, assumes a mandate until 2025.

After a full day of exhibitions and debates, in more than eight hours of videoconferencing with guests and experts, this Wednesday (29), delegates elected to the 1st Extraordinary Congress of Fruse (Interstate Federation of Urban Workers of the Southeast), elected the entity's new leadership for a four-year term.

The single slate of candidates, later unanimously elected by urban workers from the states of São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais, is composed of 26 leaders from various of the fourteen unions affiliated with the Federation.

The election process was handled by the Electoral Commission, elected earlier in the morning, also unanimously, with Carlos Alberto Alves (Sinergia CUT) as president, along with union leaders Rosana Gazolla and Rosana Grigoletto.

"Most important moment"

Before submitting the vote to the new leadership of Fruse, the then-president, Marcelo Fiorio, emphasized that "we have reached the most important moment of this Congress." He then presented a general overview of the upcoming challenges for the new Fruse CUT administration, including proposed resolutions on the main guidelines for the Federation's strategic, political, and organizational planning. The proposal, put to a vote, was unanimously approved.

The final meeting of the Fruse Congress, which conducted the election, was taken over by the Electoral Commission. Carlos Alberto Alves, as president of the Commission, highlighted the importance of the single registered slate and the fact that there were no challenges to its registration.

Next, Fiorio explained the motto "United and Organized We Are Stronger," which emerged to strengthen the urban planning sector throughout Brazil, with the creation of regional federations. This followed a history of Fruse's organization, highlighting the challenge of creating a federation for the four states in the southeastern region in recent years.

He highlighted that, up until this 1st Extraordinary Congress, Fruse had grown from six to fourteen unions in the southeast, thus incorporating new names into the leadership that will head the Federation. Now, with a minimum quota of 30% women and the inclusion of leaders who combat racism.

“Until now, we have been a provisional leadership. From today onwards, we have a real leadership, with extensive debate and discussion among the unions to discuss the importance of having more leaders to organize, plan and advance the struggle of urban workers in the southeastern region, one of the main CUT-affiliated federations,” said Fiorio, before presenting the slate of candidates.

"Combating inequalities and defending democracy"

Esteliano Neto, who led the single slate, stated that the new leadership has "a great responsibility in continuing the history of struggle and facing the future challenges of the Federation, in the face of attacks on the labor movement, attempts at privatization, outsourcing, increased unemployment, and technological innovations."

And he continued: “We will also fight for national sovereignty, which is so threatened, with great organization and always at the forefront in defense of Brazilian democracy. We need to be united, strong and organized, never abandoning the fight against inequalities, including those affecting women, young people, Black people and LGBTQIA+ people, to build equality within the labor movement as well.”

Finally, he warned that "together with CUT, and interconnected with the various categories of the urban sector, we will strengthen our unity and organization to make a difference."

Election by unanimity

Next, the president of the Electoral Commission, Carlos Alberto Alves, opened the voting process. The slate was elected unanimously and formally sworn in as the winning slate to assume the mandate until 2025.

At the closing, Esteliano Neto thanked everyone and took the opportunity to introduce a video tribute to the history of struggle of Marcelo Fiorio, now former president of Fruse, but who remains a leader of Sinergia CUT and CUT Nacional. The emotion in the plenary session was palpable. "Thank you for existing, my friend"...
